Local Legend Charlie Allen Rows For Macmillan

Well known Swanage character, Charlie Allen, is renowned for his success as a runner after taking up the sport after retirement and raising thousands of pounds for charity by taking park in many marathons and long distance races. Charlie has now turned to rowing for 'a bit of a change' and is taking part in the Great River Race, held on the Thames, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Gazette Chair Held To Ransom!

Yesterday we ventured outside the office to take in a little fresh air and found to our horror and disbelief that one of our outside chairs had mysteriously disappeared! The remaining chair was adorned with an anonymous ransom note stating 'We have your chair'. Inside the folded note was the message 'For its safe return, text: 'Yes, you can have two green gnomes and a bar of Galaxy' to 07(phone number) and await further instructions.'

Durlston Bus Heads For 10,000th Passenger

The 100-day Durlston Bus trial now has three weeks left to run. More than 7,000 people have used the bus since it started on 19 June. The half-hourly service between Swanage town centre and Durlston Country Park takes the strain out of the steep climb to the 280-acre National Nature Reserve.

World Record Attempt By Knight Of Lulworth Star

They decided to pit their remarkable skills against the Guinness World Record clock and attempt the most mounts & dismounts from a moving horse in 30 seconds.

Young People To Have Say In House Of Commons

All 11-18 year olds living in the UK will for the first time ever be given the opportunity to vote on the topics debated in the House of Commons. From 1st September to 17th September 2010 young people will be able to cast their vote on the UK Youth Parliament website and select the issues that will be debated by Members of Youth Parliament when they take their seats in Westminster on 29th October 2010.

Dorset's First Offshore Marine Protected Area

Long-awaited protection for some of Dorset's richest marine habitats has been confirmed. The Lyme Bay and Torbay Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is one of fifteen new Marine Protected Areas created this month. Following a lengthy selection and consultation process, the UK government has submitted the new areas to contribute to a European network of protected sites, known as Natura 2000.
